Mortgage Protection Center: does this look familiar?

Mortgage Protection Center final letterI opened a line of credit on my house, but it has opened a flood gate for mortgage protection junk mail. It's the only junk mail I get. I even figured out how to opt out of the missing child cards (I figure even if I saw the kid at the store an hour earlier, they walked up to me, said "hi", and told me their name, I still wouldn't recognize them on the cards).

When I closed on the line, I instantly called the mortgage company's privacy line to opt-out of sharing. I'm apparently getting this junk mail from companies that ignore the DMA Mail Preference Service, ignore the major credit reporting agency promotional opt-out, and they never send identifying information about the company they represent in the ad for their life insurance.

The mail always references my credit line holder, says I'll loose my house if I don't sign up with them (even though I have no intention of drawing on the line in the first place), asks for health information, and finishes with a bunch of fine print. It's obviously done in some sort of Word template with a mail merge. I get 4-5 of these a week. The business reply envelopes have cryptic return company names like "Mortgage Protection Center" or "Affiliated Mortgage Protection LLC" and they never have the same address on them.

The most common mail comes from people writing policies through Independent Life & Disability. I tried to Google "Independent Life & Disability" and only got 4 hits (10 hits when I change the ampersand to "and"). Others claimed to get my information from MPIS (but I haven't been able to figure out how to opt-out of MPIS), one identified themself from the Thomas Liscio agency in Clark, NJ, and another said I wouldn't have received their letter if I had opted-out of pre-screened credit offers (even though I am opted-out).

I'm including a typed version of one of the letters in hopes someone will know who I can contact to tell them to leave me alone:

I have no problem with business marketing themselves and certainly no grudge against helping families plan for their financial future. The issue here is how to opt out of unwanted mailings and phone calls if you choose not to receive them. Many of these companies are intentionally making that process difficult (seemingly) in the hopes of maintaining a large mailing list.

If you are one of these companies, do yourselves a favor as well as those of us who choose not to use your services (not to mention the environment) and include an opt out option.

You actually can not opt out from receiving the letters. Your information is gathered from the recorder of deeds which is public information.

I too have recently refinanced and have received offers from 4 companies. But, I get more credit card offers than mortgage insurance offers. Junk mail is a fact of life - and it is 90% of all mail I receive. I am not bothered by these letters. They do not control my financial or personal future - and I toss many without ever opening them.

I am actually going to look into the details as I would in fact be interested in such a policy with the accident / Illness / unemployment concept is of interest - and not something you can get from most local mainline insurance agents as it is not normal disability insurance and payment of mortgage for unemployment is something that I think anyone should consider given our current economy - (and having worked for 3 companies that closed). I have other adequate life insurance, have hospital income policies, and even a short term personal disability policy; but cannot do more except at very substantial cost; and would like those policies to cover other expenses and not have to worry about the house.

I have read all of the post in this thread since 2007 - and would like to point out that apparently the company methods have changed. All letters I have received do include the sending company name and a 800 contact phone number. However, three of the letters are clearly from a national clearing house that does not itself sell insurance; instead provides information to local insurance agents who will contact you from different companies (and having once sold insurance I understand that different companies operate in different areas of the country - and that many states require certain forms of insurance to be sold in person). I note that one of the letters (Mortgage Protection Center Burlington NC) states that their agents represent A.M. Best "A" rated carriers; which indicates that these are secure and well established companies. Not sure about the other companies from the other clearinghouses.

I understand the role of the clearinghouse - and the key is to research and compare the actual policies and specific companies selling the policy when you are contacted by an agent. I am hoping to have at least 3 different ones to compare. I expect to find a quality policy from a well respected insurance company for a reasonable rate.

I note that the 4th letter is only an accidental death policy.

I don't understand why so many people are upset. The information is public records (and for the person who was surprised about a company knowing about the birth of their child... - read the local newspapers on birth announcements for how public that information is).

What I don't understand is why so few people take responsibility for adequate insurance in their life. I have a friend who's husband got injured, lost his job (and company insurance) because he could not work, house went into foreclosure due to lack of payment, and when he died from complications a year later left his wife with nothing but bills and a pending eviction notice from the bank.

Have a great day,

My wife and I recently refinanced our home and we are getting bombarded on almost a daily basis by these scam mortgage insurance letters. We aren't stupid and we are never going to respond to a mailing that has no company name, no logo, no legal disclaimers, and no phone number. It's also irritating that they are putting the loan amount on each letter.

What you just said proves that you're completely ignorant. These "scam mortgage insurance letters" as you call them aren't scams at all. In fact, many of them contract for several other insurance companies in order to get the customer the best rate. And you act as if a full mailbox is being "bombarded." It's mail- I'm sure you get way more credit card offers in the mail on a regular basis, as well as other random pieces of mail that you'd pass off as "junk mail." Fact of the matter is, these are businesses, doing business.

The only reason it should be "irritating" to see your loan amount at the top of the letter is becuase you don't have adequate insurance and you simply don't know any better.

Please, if you're going to rant and complain about something, at least do SOME research to back up your ramblings with some credibility.

Just take the return envelope and tape it to a brick and drop it in the mailbox.

watch out karma is a B****

Don't want it... throw it away with the rest of your Junk mail.

Nice try mortgage insurance guy

People are sheep. A person is smart.

watch out karma is a B****

Don't want it... throw it away with the rest of your Junk mail.

At last...I recv`d `THE LETTER`and was somehow perplexed, perplaced, and lost wandering in my own exsistance, but alass have been taken through proficial mess in my own head and have awaked here amongst you. I must say, it was a turmoil getting here.
My friends...this must be the `NWO heaven`!!! (new world order) in which we have been witness as example by our banks and their ( I term it ) `THE BIG O` bailout. Free cash.

DIRECTLY TO THE POINT....The way of ez cash and no resposibility. This must be it.

Let us unitely understand, for nothing is learned by action unless first we have understanding. For the steps of understanding will together lengthen our try.

Understand that Ins. companies depend on how much WE as consumers `trust` them. In fact they go to extremes to have a look-good image.
Understand the very very few people who send these letters hide themselves ie their identity from us because it will be a direct link. We as pissed-off people here will complain to the Ins.company, give it a sour name and purposely ruin its reputation for repeatedly targeting us like they do for monitary gain and show no responsibility in doing so. It is not good for the honest insurance company either.

We have no way of regulating public info, but understand, that Ins. co. `s do regulate themselves, or the government is overseeing so. They depend on our public info and profit from it, what we need is to have them want the responsibility to uphold this ediquate. The driven force is `INS CASH` Ins people do profit from this, the big Co. and the little weasle sending these letters to us that wont stop, yes they both are making cash, thats why they wont stop! We can`t stop it.so, let the big INS. co.`s deal with this and regulate it for us.

Understand what is happening.

Save the address of your letters please.

I will be sending my letter out almost completed, I can only supply infor in which they already have and state that i am interested in more insurance and i would like to talk with a certified agent before I complete my app. At that point if an agent from a reputable company phones i will post here to let you all know who and that will be our `gopher`. That company will be the focus of our structured efforts here. I ask some of you do the same, please dont share any new info about yourselevs either,
At this point we should understand how ins. trust works and target the gopher and his contact ins. co. we must set example and go directly after that companies IMAGE, if its done correctly, other companies will fear that reaction and in that way will see their effert for our support or their IMAGE might get caught up in this and get dammaged too.

Understand, save info then combine with a structured effort. anyone have replies pertaining to this post???
thank you all for being here, you kno what they say about misery....having a bad time with this....thank God for you all, as I`m not alone.

Wow... You are really twisted. I AM one of the agents that calls those forms BACK! What you have to understand is that when you buy a house, it IS public record. A company actually pays for the information and when you fill out the letter saying you want more info, we as agents pay for those and we contact you. If you fill out a letter, an online form, anything asking for more info and give them your phone number, then expect a call back! That is how it works. Don't be upset. If you don't want a call back, then throw away the letter and stop complaining about life!

Since you are one of the agents...STOP sending out CRAP!!!!!!!! I NEVER filled out a form and I keep getting this crap. It has to be some sort of con or you would follow the law and allow people to opt-out. Pretty damned simple, set up a program to filter out the names that have used the opt-out option. Certainly a group of con artists can figure out how to do that, can't they??

The point here is these letters are very suspect and seem very malicious. Coming in an envelope that exclaims it has something urgent about your loan, then opens to asking for information that my loan company ALREADY has. In a world where letters similar to these prey on unsuspecting victims you need to understand that many people will find these letters threatening.

In these letters (I've been getting a slew of them) you ask for DoB, Phone Numbers, Height, Weight, etc... Returning this letter with that information having no knowledge of who is receiving them is not a practice people should take up. I have life insurance already, but I researched the company and sought them out. I NEVER accept a service oriented business from a random phone call or mailing. In fact, I don't even want to talk to anyone from that company - even if it is a service I am looking for - without first doing my research.

This may be successful to you and your ilk, but don't be upset (as you obviously are) about those of us who despise this practice (the practice of mailing these). You will not receive a return from me, but I demand you put a visible opt-out option and honor it!

I understand sales is a tough job, even when you are trying to sell something useful. But practices like these only make your job worse because it only fuels people like us to despise it more. I simply throw away the cards I get from HomeDepot and the coupon books without getting annoyed at junk mail, they look like advertisements from the envelope. Your letters *seem* important and thus force me to open them to make sure I don't throw anything away that I shouldn't. In front of my last envelope: "Urgent Information Concerning Mortgage Holder" and it includes my lenders information. It's understandable that general people will fill out all of this information fearing that if they don't something will happen. It's easy, we just filled out 100's of papers to get the house, many people might think this is just something more.

You waste my time trying to sell me a product I don't want! Whenever you do this, you lose any value to the case you are trying to make. If it was obvious that you were trying to sell something then I would happily leave you alone and throw the envelope away unopened until I actually wanted/needed your product.

All you people who are upset...listen to this...I am one of those who mail to you. I have written these types of policies for over 34 years. I have delivered death checks to over 40 people in my time. Everyone hates the insurance man, until someone dies, then they want to know how much he had. And as for bothering your "oh so precious time..." if we don't ask, you don't buy. All the studies show that as long as you have your six pack and a tv, you could care less about taking care of your family if something happens to you. It's too bad, I would rather save the costs and have you call me, but that ain't gonna happen. So, I will continue mailing, at my expense, I will continue getting about 2% of the people who are thankful someone lit a fire under them, and I will continue helping families keep their homes in the worst of scenarios. For all of the others that are bothered by my efforts...you explain to your wife and kids why making sure they get to keep their home in case you die isn't worth the crummy $40 a month it would cost...after all that's two cases of beer, right?!!!

Price a term insurance life insurance policy for the amount of the mortgage, one that's coverage decreases over time, and you'll find it is much cheaper to insure yourself that way. As for disability insurance that the "mortgage insurance" companies offer along with the life insurance, you should already have a good disability policy, again cheaper through a reputable insurance firm.

Not to give you a clue, cause you wouldn't recognize one in a bowl, but, the companies offering mortgage protection are the very same companies you are saying to look for. These are top rated carriers that offer a specific need label called "mortgage" term. If you want regular term, we have that too....same policy...it's a marketing tool that gets people to think specifically about one need, that's all. And as for "decreasing term"..hate to tell you, the only companies still offering that term are the lowest rated companies. Its the biggest ripoff in the industry. In ten years you're paying for a full amount of insurance on about half the death benefit. There is virtually no difference in the cost and our "level insurance" maintains its value all the way through the mortgage, allowing for some extra coverage as the person gets older. I'm the first to say, you should do some checking, compare, or talk to an independent broker who represents a bunch of companies and he can show you the different products available for your purpose. The letters are a prospecting technique that awaken about 2% of the people to take action, action that they never would have taken on their own. They are very thankful when we do our job well and the value of that is something that is in the peace of mind

Reputable companies offer decreasing term insurance for mortgage protection reasons. Contrary to the insurance guy selling the mortgage protection insurance, this is the better policy for you because you are only paying for what you need. The reason the insurance policy amount is going down while you are paying the same premium is "you are getting older" and the amount due on your mortgage is decreasing too.

Lets say you have a 30 year mortgage, do you have any idea what may happen to your health over the next 30years? The reason they don't choose a decreasing term is so that if something happened down the road and lets say the client had a stroke, and now needs more coverage, if they have a straight term they will still have it and are protected. If they chose the decreasing term and need more coverage they may not be able to get coverage or afford the coverage because of their health issues. Another thing I might add is that a decreasing term through your mortgage lender may be not only an accident only policy but also if you sell your home that policy goes away VS. a transferable policy like these agents are providing.

Most people don't want to meet with an insurance agent, they are too busy. This provides a delivery service to your home to take care of what to me is most important - your family. So you get a few letters in the mail, so what, this company is trying to the ones who care for their family or the ones who have never realized about what will happen if tomorrow the major bread winner isn't coming home and the next thing they have to worry about is the house payment. Forget the $....It's about protecting Middle Class America who do not have "financial advisers" to show them there are ways to change their families future.

You sound just like an agent from MPC I was talking to the other day...

I also received these letters and am very interested in getting mortgage insurance, especially mortgage insurance for disability and unemployment. I did a lot of research and called some renamed companies but none of them offer mortgage insurance due to unemployment. Does anyone know of this type of insurance and where I can get it from a legitimate insurance company?

Thanks!

I'm only on this site because some of you cannot dial the phone correctly and you get my consulting business instead. I have a Ph.D. in Finance and I teach investments at a major university. My litmus test for shady insurance agents is when they badmouth decreasing term insurance. Their sole motivation is their own wallet not what is best for you as the client. Decreasing term pays the smallest commission to the insurance agent. If you are interested in mortgage insurance and you do not have a good retirement plan in place, then talk to a local insurance agent that you trust but make sure you get a decreasing term policy that is amortized to your mortgage. This is the cheapest life insurance you can buy from a life insurance company. The level term policy the agent on this site wants to sell you plus the throwin disability just raises your cost and lines his pocket. Life insurance is meant for younger people. Once you are over 50 or 60, it is a very expensive product. That's why you have to have a good retirement savings plan in place by the time you are in your late 20s as it replaces the need for life insurance as you grow older.

The Mortgage Protection Center in NC that seems to concern people in this comment string has a D grade from the BBB. The NAA website I looked at looks suspiciously like a pyramid marketing scheme. I have always purchased decreasing term insurance since I was in my 20s and the company I use has the highest rating given by Best. Every time a kid was born or I signed mortgage refinancing papers, I revisited my decreasing term policies and bought more.

I always tell my students to go out and buy insurance. Don't be sold insurance or buy it for emotional reasons. Decide what you want and go out and get it. If the agent badmouths decreasing term and starts making emotional arguments about protecting your family, show him/her the door. You will be better off.

You should take up golf they will even let you play if you pay in cash so the little snickers dont get your highly valued credit card number. They can be so rascally. Seriously get help if not for you for your family.

They now include in the addressee window the amount of my mortgage, so the mail lady, my house keeper and anyone else can see how much I owe. Sounds like the Federal Trade Commission should get involved.

Yeah and while you get the Federal Trade Commission involved. Ask them take everything else that is public information and hide it as well! LOL Just cause you don't want other to see it doesn't mean it's not legal for them to know it. Sorry, you'll just have to suck this one up!

To all of you who have nothing better to do than complain about something so trivial.
I work with several companies that provide Mortgage Protection,as well as other services that could potentially save a family from financial ruin. Yes some of these companies may not be looking out for your best interest. However the companies I work with provide a great service. Do you know of someone who has died of an accident or a sudden illness which left their family in a financial disaster? Or maybe an accident that left them disabled and could not pay their mortgage or any thing else. I have, and it aint pretty. We all have to make a living, and I enjoy helping families with their financial needs. The next time you get one of these so called letters in the mail you may ask yourself , have I thought outa plan for my family if something were to happen to you,or do you not care enough about them to bother. Or mayb your to busy to bother. In any case live and let live. Oh by the way you are not promised tomorrow so enjoy today.

I understand your point of view but this is not trivial the information that they are obtaining is nothing short of stealing and can lead to identity theft of which have seen peoples lives ruined because of some jerk-off relaying way too much info in a letter of which can be obtained from some random stranger walking down the street. So in short don't be so nieve and understand that this is wrong and fraudulent in more ways than one.

God bless and good luck

The information the insurance or marketing companies obtain is 100% legal and even that random stranger walking down the street your worried about CAN obtain the same information. It is Public Information. Period. If you don't want anyone to know about it, don't take out a mortgage, or don't have your name put on the mortgage.

Agreed - This is a true statement

If a person wants Mortgage insurance they will contact a company. I get daily letters and I am sick of it.

I suppose you would like your personal information plastered all over mail for anyone to see? Like your financial institution, your loan info, etc. ?

I just received a letter in the mail from MPI Srvcs. While searching for the phone # for this company came accross this update.
I'm interested in these service and would like to know how I can get a quote from a reliable company.
Thank you
Brad

I have received several of these flyers, both to my home and my rental home. I was able to obtain a phone number for the Citrus Heights address at 6939 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, CA. 95610. The number is (916)723-8292. I spoke to a young lady at the business and politely told her I would like to be deleted from their mailing list. She asked me to provide the 8 digit bar code number at the bottom of the page and assured me I would be removed from the mailing list. Hopefully this will work. Good luck to all.

I just called the number and gave the barcode number at the bottom to the young girl who answered. Hopefully it will work. Here's the site too: http://www.insurancewholesalers.com/ContactUs/Contact.htm

They obviousley don't do their homework do they or they would know my wife and I do not have a mortgage. The house was paid for by cash in full. Dum idiots I'd say because unless they are going to pay us to insure with them they are on a rocking horse going nowhere fast. (makes note:- must put these people on our investigate list).

Our mortgage is paid off. We have a reverse mortgage. I am sick of getting these letters every day telling me I must complete and some said things like this is your third notice making me think it is something I did not do. This should not be leagel

I included a very special message in the postage paid envelope. It was a brown message on a piece of toilet paper, if you catch my drift! Imagine if everyone did this..

Don't you realize that there are people that open these envelopes that have NOTHING to do with the company, they are probably paid just over minimum wage to open envelopes and you are going to get them sick? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!

my brother in law is DHS and a friend is an attorney, so I thought I would ask them what they thought.

Apparently sending human excrement through the mail IS illegal and can considered bio-terrorism which is a federal offense.

So go for it if you really want. But when you get out of federal prison and start filling out job applications, remember you have to say yes to a federal offense and provide details.

of course it would be funny to write "see attached paper" in the details box and attach a piece of used toilet paper... that would probably reduce your chances of getting that job though

I will do the same!!!!!!!

Few hairs too!!!!!!

Ever since we closed on our first house over a year ago I've received about 20 of these same letters from the same company shown in the scanned image. I have researched all the top life insurance companies and have never heard of this company. I can't even find their website. And what do they mean about no medical exam for the first 13 months? In my research ALL the life insurance companies require a medical exam no matter how young or fit you may be.

There are Definitely.. yes, Absolutely, several insurance companies who issue thousands of policies each week with NO med exam. They have established relationships with various companies whose agents sell them. They can issue up to 200-300k policies. If information is found during underwriting that they Do have some sort of medical issue, they will not be accepted depending on what the issue is. You just may not be able to get this done going directly to the same insurance company, but by going through the agency(s) that they have the special relationships with.

I would like to start by saying that I am the Marketing Director for a major life & health insurance company, and from a marketing perspective, these letters are a waste of dead trees and represent what people dislike about insurance agents in the first place. Gaining access to someones public info and then trying to make this look like a legitimate insurance offer that appears that it may have come from your mortgage lender is shady, con-man business and It speak volumes about what kind of company is behind such coverage.

Secondly, if they have access to my public records, get the information right, for God's sake. They butchered my last name and had my uncle's first name with my address. This program must be run by some real geniuses, if they can't correctly transfer information from one list to another.

Anybody want some basic, but important advice? If you receive an offer for something that will cost you money and the only contact info the company that is soliciting you is willing to give you is a PO Box, shred it. Better yet, do what I did. Google the PO Box and find their website and slam them on their own website.

There is no "contact us" section that I could find on this site. They don't want you to contact them. Just fill out that crappy, mass mail merged letter and send them your money. That's what they want. If it is this hard to just figure out who is soliciting you, imagine how hard it would be to file a claim if you were unfortunate enough to buy this coverage.

There are a million ways to buy life insurance. Do your homework. Plan your future. And don't send these whachjobs any of your money. You may never see it again.

These letters are just one way for a company to offer someone something they need. You obviously are bitter that these companies are taking away alot of business from your company.

One company I know of is one of the fastest growing insurance companies in the US, which must make you bitter. They only offer insurance thru A rated companies that have been around for as long as 150 yrs. And I am sure that their prices are much better then yours, because I have compared most.

P.S. I AM SURE YOUR COMPANY SEND THREE TIMES AS MUCH MAIL TO ME AS I HAVE RECEIVED FROM THEM!!!

the first insurance guy was absolutely right. they won't put a phone number so you can call and ask questions and the only contact info they give you is a po box in b.f. n.c.. this company is naaleads.com. give their site a look and tell me you don't see scam written all across it. it appears to be some half *ssed attempt at a pyramid scheme, but i had no intentions of studying it to figure it out. as soon as i saw the william mccorkle style of trying to rope suckers, i clicked off. i am no fan of the insurance industry, but most private agents working for big legit companies have at least gone through ethics training..and this "mortgage protection center" certainly has no one working for it that even knows what ethics are.

i got one of these letters, and i have to say they must have some real idiots working for them. the info was not only wrong, but what was right was over 18 years old and in the end there is no mortgage on my house. idiots. complete idiots. the better business bureau recommends staying away from them, and we all know how easily the bbb looks the other way when the company keeps paying their dues. what does that say about them. i rest my case. my advice if you get one of these scare tactic scam letters...tear it up. do not send any money to these morons.

150 Million dollar company.... Scam? uh yeah right. To all of you who don't know, the way insurance agents have been making money for over 200 years have been through hiring people and making residual income off their new agents efforts. EVERY Insurance Agency does this. So this must mean they are ALL scams then. The MLM companies stole the idea and created their own operation. Clearly life insurance is far more important then selling vitamins and soap products.

In the cited post, the web address www.naaleads.com is given as the company that generates the mail that comes from the Mortgage Protection Center. The company's website confirms this by showing a sample form just like the one we receive. In another section for contact us, the following informaiton is given, including the names and phone numbers of the officers of this company. The following is taken directly from their website, at address https://www.naaleads.com/contact_naa.php. Just like them, I have decided to share public information.

Often you can find out more information about these companies by looking them up on the Better Business Bureau website (http://bbb.org). The one which I looked up was actually a legitimate business. However, it's quite probable if I looked up all of the insurance offers that I've been receiving, I'd probably find some very questionable or non-verifiable businesses.

Although there are a lot of scams in the marketplace today, when a person who arbitrarily labels all solicitations that they receive and are not interested in as scams without research or basis, it says more about their personality and character than it does about the validity of the offer or credibility for the business making the offer.

Bottomline: If you are interested in a product, do your homework before buying it. If you are interested in consumer protection advocacy, do your homework before calling it a scam -- and if you call it a scam, present you evidence. If you are not interested in the product, shred it -- life's too short to waste time being upset over junk mail IMO.
